How speed tiers shape decisions

Speed tiers translate base Speed into real Lv.50 numbers so you can decide whether a Pokemon should be faster, slower, or supported by speed control. The goal is not always to maximize Speed. The goal is to move before the threats that matter, move after allies when that helps positioning, or become slow enough to function under Trick Room.

Data source and calculation logic

The table uses the local Pokemon Champions stat dataset. Values are calculated for Lv.50 speed benchmarks: no Speed EVs, full Speed investment, positive speed nature, and minimum Speed with 0 IV and negative nature. The weather boost filter highlights Pokemon with common weather speed abilities, but other effects such as Tailwind, Trick Room, Choice Scarf, paralysis, and ability-specific changes should be considered separately.

How to use this page

  • Search the Pokemon you plan to use and note its neutral, max, positive-nature, and minimum-speed values.
  • Search common threats from Meta Stats and compare the numbers that matter for your matchup.
  • Use just enough Speed EVs to beat your target when possible, then invest the rest into damage or bulk.
  • For Trick Room teams, check minimum Speed so your attacker moves earlier while Trick Room is active.
  • Use the weather filter when planning sun, rain, sand, snow, or booster-style speed modes.

Practical examples

If a Pokemon is only one benchmark below a common attacker, a positive nature or a small EV increase may change the matchup. If it is far below the target, Tailwind or priority may be a better plan than forcing maximum Speed. If a slow attacker is meant for Trick Room, reducing Speed can be as important as increasing damage because it changes the order of the entire turn.

Choice Scarf and weather abilities can create temporary speed tiers that do not show in the base table. Tailwind doubles current Speed for the team side, while Trick Room reverses move order among normal priority brackets. Always decide whether your team wins by natural speed, temporary speed control, or surviving long enough to reset the order.

Common mistakes

  • Using max Speed because it feels safe, even when it does not beat any relevant target.
  • Ignoring nature when comparing two Pokemon with similar base Speed.
  • Forgetting that Tailwind, Trick Room, weather, Choice Scarf, paralysis, and priority change the practical order.
  • Building a fast team with no backup when the opponent reverses speed control.
  • Comparing only attackers while the support Pokemon that sets speed control is too slow to act.

Is max Speed always best?

No. If the extra Speed does not change relevant matchups, those EVs may be better spent on bulk, damage, or a different team role.

What is speed creep?

Speed creep is investing just enough Speed to beat common spreads that stop below maximum. It is useful, but it can become wasteful if every team keeps over-investing.

How do I plan for Trick Room?

Check minimum Speed values, choose Pokemon that still threaten damage while slow, and make sure your team has a plan for turns before and after Trick Room is active.
